Morecambe

Morecambe has always been one of the nation’s favourite seaside destinations, but recently has it has undergone something of a resurgence in popularity. It could have something to do with the regeneration that the town has seen of late or it could be because more people in the UK are choosing to holiday at home rather than go abroad, but Morecambe is becoming a go to destination for families around the UK and of course for visitors from overseas coming to experience the archetypal British seaside resort.

The major buildings along the sea from such as the iconic art deco style Midland Hotel, used in many television period dramas and the Victoria Pavilion are listed buildings. The Victoria Pavilion is probably more recognisable by its other name of the Morecambe Winter Gardens. It is good to know that there are some aspects of the resort that will never change no matter what kinds of development take place elsewhere in the resort, the appeal that has drawn visitors for generations will always continue.

Things To Do

At most seaside resorts they say that you have to try the fish and chips, but when you come to Morecambe you are strongly advised to try the potted shrimp, especially from James Baxter & Sons who have been in the business since 1799, they are regarded around the world as being the best available. You simply have to take an open top bus tour of the bay and not just on any bus, on an authentic vintage open top bus; no visit to Morecambe would be complete without it, that or having your photograph taken next to the statue of the man doing the funny walk, namely Eric Morecambe (Eric Bartholomew) who grew up here. You must of course spend some time on the beach in Morecambe. The sands are clean and spacious and the promenade extends for a full five miles, the perfect place for a walk on which you can observe some incredible sea views.

Places To Visit

Happy Mount Park was developed in the 1920’s and is just as popular today as it was then. There are a number of beautiful woodland walks to follow a peaceful Japanese garden as well as a putting green, miniature railway, a play park and traditional swing boats plus much more to entertain the whole family. The Morecambe Townhouse Gallery is filled with silk screens and incredible limited editions everything from the truly traditional to the very contemporary, and there are special exhibitions and events on throughout the year.

Pay a visit to the sailing club and learn how to have fun out on the water. Relax in the West End Gardens which are located between Regent Road and the Battery and enjoy the views that stretch out right across to the Cumbrian coastline. The Winter Gardens are a must visit location, they have been recently restored to how they were in their hay day when they were the venue to visit for the very best in cabaret and musical entertainment.
